Original Little Shop?

edited February 2012 in Theater
I recently came across these clips from a "pro-shot" version of the original off-Broadway Little Shop. Is this really it, or some smaller scale touring production?

  • That is not the Off-Broadway production. Those clips are from a pro-shot video of a production that toured Japan in 86/87. While it is in the spirit of and somewhat similar to the original off-broadway production, it is not a reproduction of it. This production was directed and choreographed by Victor Valentine and does not use the original choreography, sets, or costumes. It is, however, a fantastic production that is the closest you'll get to a pro-shot video of the off-broadway production, besides the one at the Lincoln Center Archive, that is.

In case you were wondering, here's the full info on that production
    Bert Hilkes as Seymour Krelborn
    Marsha (Skaggs) Waterbury as Audrey
    David Kaiserman as Mr. Mushnik
David Jordan as Orin Scrivello/Narrator/Skip Snip/Patrick Martin, etc.
    Natalie Oliver - Ronette
    Angel Jemmott - Crystal
    Sharon Lorraine-Young - Chiffon
Tyrone Aiken - Voice of Audrey 2
    Jonas Cole - Puppeteer
    Victor Valentine - Director/Choreographer
Produced by David Eastman and Steven Warnick

I think these are clips from the 1987 performance filmed for Japanese TV. I know for certain that it was at least BASED on the original staging, but I'm not sure if it was the original production or not.

Ignore what I just said. I was typing that as @loganculwell was posting. (Though I did read that the original Audrey II puppets where used.)

Oh, what I would give to see this entire show!

  • Also, this, which is linked from one of the other site's Little Shop posts: http://mondomusicals.blogspot.com/search/label/alan menken
  • After a year of searching, I found it and uploaded it to DAD.

  • They must have had a lot of commercials to get in - that's the fastest version of Downtown I've ever heard.
  • Not to mention the speedy introduction to "Don't Feed the Plants."
