A B'Way Musical Legacy in Animation

edited August 2016 in Disney
Given the huge impact that Howard Ashman and Alan Menken had on the creation of animated musicals (both at Disney and other studios) with their work on THE LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, it really amazes me, upon reflection, that their collaboration would instigate a trend (for lack of a better word) of theatrical composers/lyricists writing for such films, especially when you consider the caliber of talent that has left their mark on the art form- Tim Rice (ALADDIN, THE LION KING), Stephen Schwartz (POCAHONTAS, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME), Lin-Manuel Miranda (MOANA), David Zippel (MULAN, HERCULES), and Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (ANASTASIA), among others.

Simply put, it's an astounding legacy that they have left.

  • It also begs the question, which theatrical songwriter will be the next to score an animated feature?
