The Eggplant That Ate Chicago

edited August 2012 in Theater
I always wondered if Howard was inspired at all by this 1967 novelty song by Howard Greenbaum (who later recorded "Spirit in the Sky"). I discovered this song in a cover version by the wonderful R&B shouter Big Maybelle. The lyrics go like this:

You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
For he may eat your city soon.
You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
If he's still hungry, the whole country's doomed.

He came from outer space, lookin' for somethin' to eat.
He landed in Chicago. He thought Chicago was a treat.
It was sweet, it was just like sugar!

You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
For he may eat your city soon (wacka-doo, wacka-doo, wacka-doo)
You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
If he's still hungry, the whole country's doomed.
It's in trouble!

Repeat verse & chorus, etc.

  • I don't think so, he never played or mentioned the song, that I know of. Very funny, though. And seasonally appropriate!
